2008北京奧運男排最後四個名額的其中一席將於本週在德國產生，從今天開始一連三天在杜塞道夫的ISS DOME開戰，包括地主德國、中華台北、古巴以及西班牙都將同台角逐這通往北京的門票，也是這四隊搶進奧運的最後機會。奧運男排最終資格賽與女排資格賽不同，共有三站分別在德國、葡萄牙以及日本陸續登場，而目前進行中的女排最終資格賽只有日本一站並同時決定最後四個名額。
然而在資格賽開打前夕卻有不幸的消息傳出，德國杜塞道夫市長Joachim Erwin在上週四因癌症過世了，為了追憶這位市長，在週五首場比賽開打前，亦即德國與中華隊之戰開打前，將全場默哀一分鐘，而德國隊也將在比賽時繫上黑絲帶。
昨日（5/22）中華隊總教練張榮祥在賽前記者會表示：我們隊伍相當年輕，我希望能藉由這次資格賽汲取許多經驗來為下一次的廣州亞運做準備，而明天與德國之戰目標我希望我們在每一局至少都能得15到20分。

Düsseldorf, Germany, May 22, 2008 – One of the last Olympic berths for Men’s Volleyball teams will be decided in Düsseldorf, where on Friday the teams from Germany, Chinese Taipei, Cuba and Spain will start the battle to get a ticket for Beijing. The tournament will be the first of three different FIVB Men’s World Olympic Qualification competitions, while the last four Women’s Olympic berths will be decided on Sunday in Japan. Portugal and Japan will host the other two Men’s tournaments next week.
Sad news hit the city just before the start of the competition: Düsseldorf’s long-time mayor Joachim Erwin died of cancer last Tuesday. Theofanis Tsiokris, President of the FIVB Control Committee, said: “On behalf of the FIVB and the Volleyball family I would like to express my condolences to the family. It is a big loss, also because he brought forward sports in Düsseldorf.”
To honour the memory of the mayor, who enabled the Olympic Qualification, a minute’s silence will take place right before the first match of the tournament on Friday, Germany versus Chinese Taipei (17:00 hrs). The German team will wear a black ribbon during the match.
The four head coaches had on Thursday their first official press conference.
Orlando Samuels Blackwood (Cuba): We are in Germany with a very young team and we have a lot of new players. We have come here believing that we can qualify, however we have to play on our highest level. I hope that the young players’ nerves can resist the pressure.
Jung Hsiang Chang (Chinese Taipei): My team is very young and I hope to gain a lot of experience during this tournament for the next Asian games. I hope that we can score 15 to 20 points per set in the match against Germany tomorrow…
Marcelo Mendez (Spain): It’s our goal to qualify for the Olympic Games. I know it’s a very difficult pre-Olympic qualification tournament and therefore we have to fight hard. It’s normal, that the players are not top fit after playing a long period in their clubs. However we have to will to qualify.
Stelian Moculescu (Germany): I feel good. I know we are in a strong pool with the European Champion, Cuba as a very strong Volleyball nation and the team from Chinese Taipei, about which we don’t know a lot. It is our big goal to qualify for the Olympic Games after 36 years of absence. Concerning Stefan Hübner, I hope that my doctor does a good job and that Stefan will be able to play in the end of the tournament.
